After the launch of the Virtual Kenya site in June of 2011, it was then that the outreach campaign predominantly focusing on Nairobi Metropolitan, Central Province and part of the Rift Valley shifted into complete gear. Each event was unique as it was informative on the data needs for different users.It been increasing clear that a central repository for data has become even more urgent.

More than 11 focus groups were reached and close to 400 people trained with varied depths of hands - on - sessions.

  • For trainers who were going to retrain others, two day training events were conducted
  • For University students interested in using this data for their final year project or for spatial analysis, 3 - 5 hour one day trainings were conducted.
  • For G.I.S. developers and Professionals seeking to share data, develop similar platforms or use Virtual Kenya for internal use, 2 hour presentations were conducted to give them an indepth understanding of the sites capabilities
The training was basically broken down to three categories:
  • Beginners       : Primary and High school teachers and students who teach/use Geography and locations in class
  • Intermediates : College/University level students who are already using G.I.S. but would like to expand their knowledge
  • Advanced       : G.I.S professionals and tutors who have advanced knowledge of different platforms and have some capacity to so spatial analysis or web based developments
Some of the organisations and focus groups that received training in different capacities are:

  2. Regional Center for Mapping of Resources for Development (RCMRD) - RCMRD staff
  3. Train the Trainers for Education and Conservation - WCK,KWS and K.I.E staff
  4. Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (J.K.U.A.T) - Geomatics Department
  5. University of Nairobi - Geospatial Engineering
  6. Global Youth Forum World Bank Youth
  7. University of Nairobi                                                                             - ICT School of Computing
  8. SCGIS ESRI - GIS users in conservation
  9. Geospatial Users Group Kenya iHub - GIS power users
  10. Applied Geoinformatics for Society and Environment (AGSE)                - A.G.S.E focus group
  11. Eye on Earth Summit , Abu Dhabi
